The Ferrari 250 GTO has long been a record breaker whether on the race track or in the showroom. The current holder of the world’s most expensive car was sold in 2018 to car collector David MacNeil for an eye-watering $70 million in a private sale.
The car’s immense value is said to be down to its participation at the 1964 Tour de France as well as competing in Le Mans.

The Ferrari 250 GTO not only holds the record for the most expensive car ever sold, but also for a car sold at auction. The hammer came down in 2014 on this example for $38,115,000.
The Most Expensive Formula One Car Ever Sold
Mercedes-Benz W196 ($29,600,000)
A rich racing pedigree can add millions to the value of a car and there’s no better example than the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196. The car in question was raced by five-time F1 world champion Juan Manuel Fangio and fetched a whopping $29,600,000 at Bonhams auction at the Goodwood Festival of Speed back in 2013.

Aston Martin DBR1 ($22,500,000)
If you think of British classics there’s only one brand that comes to mind: Aston Martin. The 1956 Aston DBR1 was sold by Sotheby’s at Monterey Car Week for $22,500,000 in 2017 and still holds the crown as the most expensive British car ever sold.
The fact it was driven by the late Sir Stirling Moss will have only added to its value.
The Most Expensive New Car Ever Sold
Bugatti La Voiture Noire (~$18,000,000)
It’s owner remains anonymous but the Bugatti La Voiture Noire, understood to have sold for around $18 million in 2019, was built to mark Bugatti’s 110th birthday that year and pay homage to the Bugatti Type 57 Atlantic.
